Harry Clarke (1889-1931)

Irish stained glass and graphic artist. Born Henry Patrick Clarke and the son of Joshua Clarke who had a decorating and stained glass business. Trained under A.E. Child at Dublin Art School and was winning awards for his stained glass by the age of twenty. In 1912 he travelled to London where he worked on several illustrative commissions, clearly influenced by Aubrey Beardsley, D.G. Rossetti and E.J. Sullivan. Shortly afterwards he travelled to Paris and Chartres. His first stained glass commission was completed in 1917 and by the time of his early death in 1931 he was perhaps the most influential stained glass artists of his generation. The stained glass branch of the family firm of Joshua Clarke & Sons studio continued after his death as Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios Ltd.
