The picture is a copy of St Michael Slaying Lucifer (1636) by Guido Reni (1575-1642) for Cardinal Franceso Barberini, and now in Sta Maria della Concezione, Rome. The features of Lucifer are those of (from 1644) Pope Innocent X, which may be seen by comparison with his portrait by Velasquez.
