St David
from St Teilo and St David

Two-light window with standing figures of the saints, dressed as a bishop and an archbishop, holding staffs. Teilo (whose name given here in the form Teilyau), also holds a bell.
Church of St Teilo, Merthyr Mawr, Bridgend
west wall of the nave
These early depictions of Welsh saints perhaps anticipate the sympathy for the Celtic Revival which may be seen in the later nineteenth-century collection of Celtic Revival gravestones of the Nicholl family in the graveyard. The antiquarian interests of the donor is perhaps also reflected in the form used for Teilo, which is similar to the oldest known form of the name, Teiliau (Latin: Teliaus), used in the early medieval Book of Chad. The name is nonetheless given after the Welsh 'Sant'; in contrast, David is given in the Welsh form, Dewi, but also follows Sant, rather than the more usual 'Dewi Sant'.
