St George

George (or Georgius) was martyred at Lydda in Palestine around the beginning of the fourth century. His cult spread across the Eastern and Western Church from the sixth century. His association with the defeat of the dragon, and his adoption as the patron of England, came much later, following the 'discovery' of his cult by western crusaders in the twelfth century, and his legend was popularised in the Golden Legend.
