St Francis of Assisi

Francis(cus) of Assisi (1181–1226) founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) having exchanged his wealth for poverty. His cult was spread through the dispersal of the order across Christendom from the twelfth century, and Assisi remains an important centre of pilgrimage.
