St Bernard of Clairvaux
Bernard was a Cistercian monk and abbot of Clairvaux (died 1153). He was born at Fontaines, near Dijon in France. The order founded the abbey at Whitland in 1140, and its houses were among the most influential and prosperous in Wales. Bernard was canonised in 1174.
