St Andrew, apostle

In the gospels the apostle Andrew was a fisherman, the brother of Peter, who became one of the most prominent disciples of Christ. He became the patron of the church in Constantinople, and his cult was widespread across the Western Church. He was adopted as the patron of Scotland and is associated with the saltire cross, which remains on the Scottish flag. In Wales he is co-patron of St Davids Cathedral.
