St Ambrose, bishop of Milan
Ambrose (339–97) was born at Trier, and was consecrated bishop of Milan in 374. One of the four Western Fathers or Doctors of the Church, he wrote against Arianism and encouraged monasticism. The Te Deum, or Song of the Church, is ascribed to Ambrose.
