St Augustine, early life
Augustine of Hippo (354–430) is one of the four Latin Fathers or Doctors of the Church. He was born in Tagaste (Algeria) and was brought up as a Christian, but his study of philosophy led him away from the faith. He taught in Rome and Milan before being converted and baptised in 386–7.
