Both figures were designed by Edward Burne-Jones, and were painted by Chadwick; the backgrounds were drawn by W.H. Knight.
Given in memory of Sarah (died 1919), grandchild of Philip Watkins of Ysguborfawr, and widow of Jenkin Rhys, and also of her second son Philip (died 1906), by her daughters Mary Edwin-Jones and Sarah Jennet Gibbins.
The figure of Humility was originally designed for a window in Boston (USA) in 1883. The cartoon was subsequently used to represent St Agnes, as well as St Dorothy, Love and Purity. The same pairing of figures using the same two cartoons was also made for the Church of St Seiriol in Holyhead in 1935.
